What this is based on

  • Payment/platform fees modeled as a single percentage of the sale price — adjust to match your stack (Shopify ~2.9% + plan, marketplace 10–15%).
  • Refunds, chargebacks and VAT/sales tax are not included — budget an extra 3–8% for them in real operations.

Why most dropshippers miscalculate margin

The classic mistake is pricing '3x over product cost' and calling the difference profit. On a $39.99 sale with a $12 product, $4 shipping, 3% payment fees and $10 of ads, the real profit is $12.79 — a 32% margin, not the 70% markup suggests. Ad spend is a cost of goods in dropshipping, full stop.

Run the calculator with your actual CPA, not your target CPA. Meta and TikTok ad accounts almost always report a better number than your blended cost per actual purchase once you include creative testing and learning-phase spend.

The two numbers that decide if a product works

Break-even ROAS tells you the minimum ad performance required: if it's 4x and your account historically delivers 2.5x, the product fails no matter how good the creative is. Most viable dropshipping products have a break-even ROAS under 3x.

Max CPA is the ceiling for what you can pay per acquisition. If it's $12 and the ad platform wants $18 per purchase, your only moves are raising price, lowering product cost, or increasing average order value with bundles and upsells.

Raising margin without raising price

Negotiate supplier pricing after your first ~100 orders — a $1–2 reduction drops straight to profit. Offer quantity bundles (buy 2 save 15%) to raise order value against a fixed CPA. And trim app/subscription costs — on a store doing 50 orders/month, a $30 app costs $0.60 of every sale.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good profit margin for dropshipping?
15–25% net margin after product, shipping, fees and ad spend is sustainable. Under 10% leaves no room for refunds, price tests or ad volatility.
What ROAS do I need to be profitable?
It depends on your costs — that's the break-even ROAS. If you sell at $40 with $17 of product+shipping+fees, you break even at 1.74x and profit above it. Use the calculator with your real numbers.
Should shipping be free in dropshipping?
'Free shipping' isn't free — it's priced in. What matters is the total the customer pays versus your total costs. Test both; conversion usually favors free shipping with a higher price.
Is dropshipping still profitable in 2026?
Yes, but the easy generic-product era is over. Margins come from niche products, negotiated supplier terms, and creatives that lower CPA — the math above is what separates stores that work from stores that burn ad spend.
